Lake Erie Fishing Report

Updates

April 1st-2nd
Fished both days off Round and Tousaint reef with good results.  Used purple hair jigs with stinger hooks.  Working the jigs very slow in17-19ft of water off Round reef and 15-17ft off Tousaint.  These fish should be moving up on the reefs real soon.  We do have a big blow coming this week so things will be tore up for a while.

Friday, April 17thJames Harrison
Today I had the pleasure of fishing with James Harrison of the Pittsburgh Steelers and his father.  They brang along a camera crew and filmed a show that will air sometime next month.  What a great guy and a great fisherman.  We got a late start, leaving the dock at 8am.  We fished 1 mile west of K-can and just had a slow pick.  The breeze picked up and then things got good.  We used 3/4oz purple hair jigs with stingers and NO BAIT.  Save your money.  You do not need minnows to catch these fish.  A slow vertical jig did the trick for us.  We quit fishing at 1pm and were 2 fish short of limit.  By the way, James caught at least half the fish.

April 18th
What a great day.  Fished again 1 mi west of K-can in 13ft of water and had a limit of fish by 8:30.  Lot of boat traffic.  Stay outside of the pack.  Everytime I would move somewhere by myself we would catch fish.  These fish get spooked easy.  There are to many boats running right over them and they quit.  Move outside the pack, away from everybody, and you will catch fish.  On the way in we stop 2mi west of Port Clinton in 13-14 feet of water.  We played catch and release with 15-20 fish in just a couple of hours.

I had another charter at 2pm the same day.  The fish in front of Port Clinton would not bite in the afternoon so we fished L-Can.   20ft of water worked well.  It was not fast but they were nice fish.  By 7pm we needed 2 more for limit and couldnt get the, so we went back off P.C on the way in and  had our fish withen 5 minutes and also thew a few back.    The weather is not looking to good for the next few days with low temps. and high winds but the wwekend looks great.  I dont forsee these fish moving much, so any of the areas fished this weekend should still be holding plenty of fish next weekend

April 25th-28th
Fishing has been great.  It blew hard Sat. Morning so we didnt fish till afternoon.  Had great success right on front of Port Clinton in 9-14ft of water. The bite got real hot just before sun down.   Sun., Mon, Tues was good 2mi west of k-can with limits on all days in just a few hours.  12-17ft of water was best.  Still using purple hair jigs/stinger without minnows.  There are still fish being caught on all the reefs.  Looking for big fish?  North side of Kellys all the way to Middle Is.   Not getting alot of fish, but if your looking for that trophy, that is where you need to go.
May 1st-May 12th
Been fishing everyday and havent posted in awhile.  Ill work on that. Instead of a day by day report im just gonna give whats working now.  When the winds are down, fishing is good.  The jig bite is still going on the rocks early in the morning.  As the day goes on and the idiots run over the rocks, move to the ledges and fish the deeper water around the reefs with crawler Harnesses.  That is what we did the last couple days and had great success.  Bouncer 2-3 cranks up and casting with a very slow retreive on the swing.  If you think your realing to slow, go slower.  These fish are hitting right before it gets to the bottom or right when its coming off.  Monday and Tuesday, this was deadly in 31ft of water North of Niagra reef.
Other hot spots 1). the deep water around the reef complex 2) D-can 3) Between L and A can  4) NW corner of Kellys IS. (BIG FISH)  5) North of Gull Shoal to the Canadian Border 6) Early morning jig bite on all the reefs 7)Deep water West of West Reef
July 1st-8th

This past week thing have been great.  We been fishing about 4-5 miles w-nw of West Sister Is.  Fish have been caught from the shipping Channel to West Sister and all the way to Middle Sister.  48/08 to the 50/10 al the way to the 48/02 line is holding alot of fish.  There have been many days we have our fish in 1 drift.  There are a lot of throw backs, but there are some really nice fish mixed in.   3/4oz weapons with gold blades have been hot.  Most fish are being taken on the bottom but we also been taking fish high on a 5 count.
